DLM Newsletter July 2023

Sunday, July 2, 2023

In Bible study today, we talked about how God is Love. We played Bingo. We read and highlighted scripture and watched a little video as part of the lesson. The children always look forward to the snack and soda. We ended our Bible study time by praying together. It's always a sweet time with them! Glory to God!

Today was Visitation Day for our secondary kids who attend New Hope High School, which is about an hour's drive from the Kabowa community. The DLM van is such a blessing on these days as the ministry transports the parents or guardians to the school for this special day to visit with their child. The parents prepare food and bring for everyone to share a meal together. It is great to spend time together. Glory to God for all our blessings!

Over the past six weeks or so, I began to experience upper gastrointestinal symptoms similar to those I had prior to the May 2022 hiatal hernia repair with fundoplication. After a couple of appointments with my doctor here in Uganda, it was decided that I would return to the US to seek medical care in hopes of resolving these issues. Today, I arrived in Atlanta and will be on medical leave for the next few months.

Brian Epechu, our DLM Partner in Uganda, took parents and guardians to Visitation Day for the second group of our secondary boarding school kiddos while I am here in the States. These kids attend Ekitangaala Transformation High School, which is about three hours away from their home. The children put on a program to show what they have been doing in their clubs. We are so proud of these children!

Mama Fab reports to Jeholand Junior Academy each day to check attendance for our sponsored children and to handle any other issues. DLM is extremely blessed to have her as a valuable employee. Today, she took these pictures of our sponsored children when they received their new sportswear uniform.

Bible study is always my favorite outreach of DLM, and I truly miss being with my children. I am very thankful for Mama Fab who is leading Bible study on Sunday afternoons just like we do when I am there in Uganda. We've been using curriculum from Little Pilgrim's Theology, and I highly recommend this for families! We're studying the Attributes of God but there are many different Biblical topics to choose from. Since the lessons are already prepared, Mama Fab is able to carry on with the lessons on the Attributes of God in my absence. The Bible study kids love the videos, coloring sheets, questions and quizzes! She shared these pictures and videos.

Mama Fab escorted a sponsor child and her mom to the local clinic. The child was diagnosed with h pylori, and the ultra sound shows fluid built up in the abdomen, which is a result of h pylori. She is receiving treatment through the donations given to DLM! JOY Clinic allows me to send children to the clinic for treatment, and then the clinic bills DLM each month for any services rendered. This is such a blessing because I am even able to communicate with JOY clinic while I am here in the US on medical leave. Glory to God!

MY MEDICAL UPDATES

Saturday, July 15, 2023

Some of you may have already heard that I am home in Bulloch County on medical leave. In May of 2022, I had surgery in Uganda, Africa, to repair a hiatal hernia. Unfortunately, those symptoms have returned over the past two months, and I am here for medical care.

Dr. Sullivan will be performing a laparoscopic procedure on Wednesday, July 19, to clean up adhesions from endometriosis. He also referred me to the Cedar Surgical Center where I had an appointment this past week with Dr. Allen who specializes in hernia repairs. He has set up a barium swallow test (July 24) and an endoscopy (July 28). The results of these tests will determine the next step.

While I am here in the States, Mama Fab will be handling Bible Study each Sunday. She will also handle the other outreaches including Educational Sponsorship and Medical. Brian will manage the house and property. I am so blessed by them. Glory to God for His blessings!!!!

Thank you all for praying for me and the ministry.

Thank you so much for the thoughts, prayers, emails, texts and phone calls.

My laparoscopic procedure by Dr. Sullivan was done this morning at 8:00. The surgery was successful, and I’ve been home resting and recovering since noon.

The next step is to have the barium swallow test on Monday, July 24 and the endoscopy on Friday, August 3, to determine the issues with the hiatal hernia.

Please continue to pray that this issue is resolved so I can return to good health!

Love to each of you,

Thank you all so much for the many thoughts and prayers for my medical concerns. The barium swallowing test (7/24) and the endoscopy (7/28) were completed this week. I will have an appointment with Dr. Allen (Cedar Surgical Center) in the coming week to discuss the results and determine the next steps. Thankfully, I'm not in pain even though I am still experiencing upper gastrointestinal symptoms.

I had a follow up appointment with Dr. Sullivan's PA on Wednesday (7/26) and am recovering nicely from that procedure.

I will continue keep you all updated via email! Thanks again for the many prayers, thoughts and emails.
