Volunteering at Masiko Church of Uganda Primary School

At the start of Term 3, teachers employed by government schools in Uganda went on strike because their salaries had not increased in four years. This continues to impact Masiko Church of Uganda Primary School, the local government school near my home. The headmaster already calls me one of his teachers because I read books to classes last year. During October, he asked me to fill in for some of his teachers by going to different classes and entertaining the children. I have been each day to cover the 11:00 am to 1:00 pm class slot. We've played around the world reviewing math facts. The children did not learn the multiplication facts for mastery, so around the world we went with addition and subtraction facts. I've taught a little grammar and some multiplication problems. We've played heads-up seven-up at times.

One particular boy in Primary 4 always asks me to read books during break/lunch that I sometimes bring. We had an extra English Bible, so I gave it to him. He was so happy, as you can see!! Praise be to God!

PLE Prayer Day and Swearing In of Prefects

Primary 7 is like 7th grade. This is the last class of primary school before students move to the secondary level. All Primary 7 students must take the nationwide exam called the Primary Leaving Exam (PLE). The students began testing today, November 3, and will complete the exam on Tuesday, November 4. This exam is so important and is a big deal to the people here. The Primary 7 candidates often receive "success cards" or gifts and money to wish them success with their exams. The schools have prayer days before the exam and leaving parties for the students after the exam. After finishing the two days of nationwide exams, they will have a long holiday break. They receive their scores at the end of January. Most secondary schools will allow all students to attend Senior 1, regardless of their PLE scores.

The pictures are from Jeholand Junior Schools Kabowa, where most of our primary sponsor children attend.

The video shows the Primary 7 students at the school singing a hymn as a performance for their parents and other students.

It was also a day of swearing in prefects. Prefects are student leaders in the school who are voted on by fellow students. Some positions of prefects are head boy and head girl, a time keeper, a sanitary prefect, and a mess prefect, who works to help cook and serve teachers' food. One of our sponsor children is the head prefect and will manage all the other student leaders of the school. Here is a video of part of her speech as she was being sworn in to the office of head prefect.

My 29th Birthday!

My birthday was October 24th, and I turned 29. Many of you wished me a happy birthday online, and I thank you so much for those birthday wishes! It was a blessed day.

On my actual birthday, I enjoyed a spa package at one of the resorts in Kampala. My gift was a 60-minute massage, a facial, and a manicure/pedicure, all for $83.00. Afterwards, I enjoyed a delicious Eritrean meal that I've been craving for a long time. I spent the rest of the afternoon at Jeholand Junior Schools Kabowa for the Prayer Day for our P7 students. On the way home, I asked the driver to stop for me to purchase a cake to celebrate with my neighbors. They rarely get cake, so the cake was really for them to sing Happy Birthday and enjoy a piece of cake. When I reached home around 7 pm, as it was getting dark, I made a quick trip to my neighbor's to enjoy the cake with them. I loved seeing them also enjoy!

Mama Fab wrapped a small cake for me and gave me a sweet card!

Saturday was a visitation day for some of our secondary boarding students. I also bought a small Ugandan-type cake for them to eat and enjoy along with sodas.

Sunday was Bible study in Kabowa, so I asked Mama Fab to make an order for a cake to celebrate with those kids, as well.

I've never celebrated my birthday for three days in a row with cakes each day! haha!

Church

I continue to travel to Kampala with a driver each Sunday so I can attend church. We leave the ministry home at 5:15 am so we can reach Kampala in time for me to eat breakfast and buy groceries. Then we pick up some of our sponsor children and go to church. Our church service starts at 10:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm. I am very thankful to be able to take these kids!

Bible Study in Kabowa

After church on Sundays, it's Bible study time at the school where most of our primary students attend. You can see the kids focused on their Bibles, reading and using their highlighters, as we study the Word together. DLM purchases English Bibles for each child in Bible study.

Ekitangaala Visitation Day (VD)

This is a picture of me and the mother of one of our sponsor children on the visitation day with our secondary boarding students. Also a picture of me with her daughter!

Garden Time

Mama Dora, my neighbor and friend, has been weeding the area between our coffee plants so she can plant beans there. This arrangement helps her by having a place to grow more beans and helps us keep this area maintained. She's also helping to take care of the coffee plants. After she weeded, I used my tiller to soften the soil to make it easier for her to plant the beans when it's time to plant. I enjoy planting and will likely help her plant the beans.

Angie is Mama Dora's youngest child. She will often bring her to the property because there is no one at home to watch her. She is so well-behaved and will sit for hours while her mom digs. She doesn't run around and usually doesn't even have anything to play with... she just sits. Some days, I take her a ball and toy cars to play with. Other times, I will take Angie inside and let her watch me exercise, shade (color), or listen to kid Bible songs.

I love helping Mama Dora peel cassava when she is going to prepare that for her family.

My cherry tomato plants that Ashley planted in May were finally ready to harvest. There were many, so of course I shared with Mama Dora. The tomatoes were very tasty. I hope to plant more, but I will soon be heading back to the US, so the planting will be postponed until I return.

PRAY FOR THE FUTURE VILLAGE BIBLE STUDY FOR ADULTS

Recently, I met with two of the elders from the church I have been attending for almost 5 years. I have a strong desire to have Biblical teaching available here in the village where I live. Prayerfully, next year we can partner with my church to begin a weekly Bible study for adults here in the community. I am so excited for my people to hear the Truth consistently. I know God will use this to fulfill His purposes and change the hearts of these people who need the Truth!
